@Paul Very smart move realizing what the costs ahead are and budgeting very early for the trip and getting the best rates. May be expensive but I'm sure the family activity is well worth it.

Great post, for us Fall means that skiing is just around the corner which takes some serious budgeting ahead of time. We buy our passes early to get the best rates and look for deals on gear for our kids. Definitely luxuries but our favorite family activity.

@Finance Great suggestion for those who do have fire places. If you have one, take advantage of it not just for heat, but also the ambiance of it. Dressing for the weather can also help keep heating costs down, no reason to blast the heat if not necessary.

@Ashley Football games or any sporting event is very expensive these days, and that's just tickets alone. Even taking the family to a movie adds up very quickly. There other ways to enjoy these types of activities or others in a more expensive manner.

Don't forget those fall leaves. Many people pay to have them sucked up off their lawn as well as having them removed from their gutters.

From a cost savings perspective, if you have a fireplace or gas logs considering using them. Natural gas is cheap (historically) and can lower your heating cost vs an equivalent electric unit. Of course you can always throw on a sweatshirt :)

So true about fall activities adding up. The estimated cost for a family of 4 to go to a Dallas Cowboys football game this year is $750 (tickets, food, parking). It'd definitely best to look for inexpensive alternatives to fun!

@James Great point. Dry cleaning can add up though, so only get it done if necessary.

Don't forget -- Dry cleaning can significantly extend the life of clothes. The longer they last, the less you have to buy.
