Being a freelancer can be one of the most rewarding work experiences. You’re your own boss, you can choose when you want to work and which projects you want to work on, and you can work from the comfort of your own home without having to worry about commuting or dealing with office politics.

But along with all those perks, there are plenty of problems that freelancers face that make it difficult to stay in business. Here are some of the more common problems that they deal with.

A General Lack of Stability

Freelancer payments aren’t very regular when it comes to using them as your main income. There is no solid job foundation that you can rely on every single week to help you pay your bills. New jobs and clients come and go every month or so, and that means putting in the legwork to keep workflow at a constant.

That means there is going to be a lot of downtimes when there is no work at all, and that can make it difficult to sustain yourself, especially with bills. One way to combat this is to stay in regular touch with clients who may have the connections you need to find other jobs.

Attracting Clients

It takes a lot of work to get the attention of clients and convince them that you’re good at what you do. Even if you do prove it to them, they may end up going with someone else because they’re cheaper. And the last thing you want to do is work below your worth.

Instead, one of the best things you can do is display your testimonials on your website so that prospective clients can see just how good you are at your job. They’re more likely to hire you if they know that other clients have had a good experience working with you.

Getting Bored

It’s very easy for boredom to set in when you’re working from home. It’s easy to become bored with the project you’re working on because it’s the same thing day in and day out, and since you work from home, it doesn’t feel like there’s any escape from it.

One way to combat this is to take on work that you actually enjoy doing; another is to increase the variety of projects you take on. Working on something different can actually increase your creativity.

 Managing Time Properly

When the only person you have to answer to is you, you may find it hard to actually get anything done because there are no ramifications for not adhering to a schedule. However, this is the fastest way to lose clients. Instead, you can fix this by creating a schedule for your work hours and sticking to it.

Becoming Distracted

Working from home also makes it easy for you to get distracted with other things going on around your home, such as your spouse wanting help with chores or needing to get a snack.

To avoid these distractions, you can put on some easy-listening music and plug in those headphones so that you can focus on the task at hand.

Being a freelancer does have its benefits, but it can be a struggle to become financially successful at what you do. With a lot of hard work and dedication, you can find the experience of being a freelancer very rewarding.
