If you have just purchased a new home, or if your home is in need of some attention, especially when it comes to furniture and décor, you most likely know how expensive furniture can be. This can be discouraging if you want to give your home that proverbial million dollar look without having to spend a million dollars. Luckily, there is a lot you can do to still give your home that deserved great look without breaking the bank.

Below are some ways to stretch you budget and get pieces of furniture and décor to make your home look great on a tight budget.

1. Redesign stock items

A good way to make stock furniture look great is to change how it looks and give it your own personal touch. In short, putting in a little elbow grease into some stock furniture can be a great way to add some character and class to otherwise bland and off the shelf furniture and décor.

For example, if you purchase a book case from a retail store, go online and look up some designer furniture book cases to get ideas on how you could modify the retail book case into something better. There are plenty of design videos online that you could watch that will give you step by step instruction on how you cloud improve your ordinary furniture.

2. Improve some of the architectural details in your home

If you want to make your home look like a million bucks, a great way to do this is to add subtle, but impactful, changes to your home architecture as well as to some of the pieces of furniture in your home. Subtle touches such as adding trimmings with detail in specific areas of your home as well as on large pieces of furniture such as wall cabinets can give your home an amazing look and feel.

3. Use large frames and mats

One great trick used in tastefully decorated homes and art galleries is to surround small pieces of art with large frames. This is a design philosophy that you can hardly make a mistake implementing if you simply note how it is tastefully done. Try it by surrounding small prints with frames about 8-10 inches from the focal piece that you want to lay emphasis on.

4. Re-use older furniture

If you have some good old furniture, you can repurpose it by upholstering it in order to give it a new lease of life. By and large, most people know that furniture pieces made in the past are of better and more durable quality than modern day furniture. This is especially true when it comes to weatherproof garden furniture as well as other pieces of large furniture in the home.

So, instead of throwing out your durable old or vintage furniture, with its out-of-fashion upholstery, just update the upholstery and save a lot while at it.

5. Contrast quality and art pieces

If you want to look like a great decorator and save some cash while you are at it, you can use a great trick and contrast expensive pieces with less expensive pieces of furniture and décor. For example, you could place a beautiful and expensive lamp on a stool bought from a retail store. Most likely, people will notice the lamp and fail to notice the ordinary stool.
